Rewrite Cheat Sheet

Keep this beside you when you write your questions to catch and fix leading framing before the call starts.

The 4-Part Test: Is your question leading?

Before you ask a question, check it against these four things. If the answer to any of them is yes, rewrite it.

  1. Does it contain the answer?
Leading: “Did you stop using it because of the price?”
Rewrite: “What led to you stopping?”
  2. Does it hint at a right answer?
Leading: “Don't you think this is faster?”
Rewrite: “How does the speed compare to your old process?”
  3. Does it allow a yes/no answer?
Leading: “Are you happy with your current tool?”
Rewrite: “Walk me through your experience with your current tool.”
  4. Does it ask about the future?
Leading: “Would you use this feature if we built it?”
Rewrite: “Tell me how you currently solve [this problem].”

Quick Rewrites for Common Mistakes

  • Instead of “Would you...” ask “Tell me about a time you did...”
  • Instead of “Is it...” ask “How is it...”
  • Instead of “Do you...” ask “Walk me through how you...”
  • Instead of “Why did you...” ask “What led to...”
