Why check your questions first?

Most bad interview data is planned in. A question like “Would you use this?” or “Don't you think that's frustrating?” invites people to be polite, and polite answers look like proof. AI tools that write interview guides make the same mistakes, and Nielsen Norman Group warns that novices often won't catch them, so the result is “interview guides with leading questions”.

Good questions ask about real past moments (“Tell me about the last time…”), stay neutral, and save your idea for the end. For examples, see leading questions and better rewrites and 30 customer discovery questions.

Frequently asked questions

Questions likely to get a polite or made-up answer: leading questions, “would you…?” questions about the future, yes/no questions where you need a story, questions that pitch your idea, and two questions in one. It also looks at the list as a whole: the order, whether anything asks about a real past example, and whether it's too long for one call.
